Located at the foot of the medieval town of Sainte-Suzanne, in Mayenne, the Sainte-Suzanne Paper Mill is a true treasure of local heritage. This still-functioning watermill offers a unique experience through guided tours led by Carlos Robert, one of the last master papermakers in France.

During your visit, immerse yourself in the fascinating world of paper mills, which marked the history of papermaking between the 13th and 18th centuries. From cutting old fabrics to drying the leaves, each stage of production is explained and demonstrated in this watermill. The tools used are faithfully reproduced from ancient Italian and Dutch models.

Here, everything is handmade, from recycled rags: linen, cotton, mixed fabrics… This rare expertise allows for the production of high-quality, pure rag paper, in perfect harmony with the artisanal techniques of yesteryear. A wonderful way to discover an almost extinct art, in one of the last paper mills in France.

Carlos Robert also brings the history of paper to life, from its appearance in Europe at the end of the 13th century to the Industrial Revolution. A fascinating guided tour through a historic mill will delight both the curious and heritage enthusiasts.
