The Erve Valley
The first Natura 2000 zone in Mayenne, the Erve valley alone lists no fewer than eight natural habitats and thirteen protected animal species. Canyon-shaped, the site is located on the eastern edge of the Armorican massif. It has limestone geological support, which, over the years, allowed water to seep in, creating cavities that prehistoric humans and animal species used for centuries. Today, researchers have identified 22 caves in the Erve Valley, including 2 (the Rochefort Cave and the Margot Cave) currently open to the public for guided tours. This site is also the alone north of the Loire to have an decorated cave, this one is presented in the prehistory museum.
