During your vacation in Mayenne, if you enjoy walks through the countryside, you'll quickly notice one of the region's distinctive features: sunken paths. But what exactly is a sunken path? It's a type of rural road located below fields, surrounded by high banks or hedges that rise on either side, creating a sort of natural tunnel. Sunken paths are sunk into the ground, making them narrow and winding.

The history of sunken roads in Mayenne

Sunken lanes were generally formed over time by natural erosion and human activity. They were often used for agricultural purposes, moving livestock, or transporting goods. Some sunken lanes can date back several centuries, bearing witness to local history and traditions.
